DuPont Titanium Technologies has made significant progress in reducing energy consumption for titanium dioxide (TiO2), achieving a nearly 30% decrease per pound of product. This efficiency gain has led to savings of over 100 million yuan, especially when crude oil prices fell below $100 per barrel. Since 2001, the business unit has saved energy equivalent to 3 million barrels of oil. As the world’s largest producer of TiO2, a white pigment used in coatings, plastics, and paper to enhance whiteness, brightness, and opacity, DuPont continues to focus on sustainable practices.
Rick Olson, vice president and general manager of DuPont Titanium Technologies, emphasized that energy efficiency is an ongoing effort. “There’s no big moment of surprise here,†he said. “Every factory around the globe is constantly looking for ways to save energy. It’s about every motor and every valve running efficiently every day.†Some improvements are straightforward, like replacing old motors with more efficient models, while others require in-depth research and innovation.
In addition to optimizing existing processes, DuPont has also developed new TiO2 products that require less energy during production. One such product, introduced in 2007 for the coatings industry, replaced a previous version that consumed more energy. Looking ahead, Olson stated that by 2015, the company aims to produce titanium dioxide with twice the energy efficiency compared to 1991 levels. “Saving energy and reducing emissions not only benefits the planet but also strengthens our business,†he added.
This initiative is part of DuPont’s broader sustainability program and will be integrated into the design of its upcoming plant in Dongying, China. The new facility, which will cost around $1 billion, will be the company’s largest overseas project. Like other DuPont TiO2 plants, it will use the chlorination process, known for its superior energy efficiency and environmental performance compared to the older sulfate method.
