On July 25, Li Yongwu, president of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, emphasized in Lanzhou that enhancing the comprehensive utilization of energy and resources and significantly reducing pollutant generation and emissions has become a top priority for the country's petroleum and chemical sector. Speaking at the National Petroleum and Chemical Industry Energy Saving and Emissions Reduction Forum, co-hosted by the association and Gansu Province's Economic Commission, he outlined six key strategies aimed at promoting energy efficiency and environmental sustainability within the industry.
According to data presented at the event, China’s petrochemical industries consumed 9% more energy in 2006 compared to the previous year. Notably, energy use for nitrogen fertilizers rose by 3%, while alkali production saw an 18% increase, and inorganic salt consumption surged nearly 20%. These figures highlight the urgent need for more sustainable practices across the sector.
Li outlined the six measures as follows: raising awareness and fostering a stronger sense of responsibility for energy conservation and emission reduction; controlling growth and optimizing the industrial structure; promoting circular economy models; advancing technological innovation to support green development; strengthening workforce training to build a capable energy management team; and improving foundational work, including establishing a robust energy-saving and emissions reduction assessment system.
Major players like Sinopec and PetroChina are already implementing these strategies. For instance, PetroChina saved 1.5 million tons of standard coal and 70 million cubic meters of water in 2006. In the first half of 2007, Sinopec achieved an energy consumption rate of 0.85 tons of standard coal per unit of output value, marking a 3.3% year-on-year decline—equivalent to saving 1.25 million tons of standard coal. These efforts demonstrate a growing commitment to sustainability and efficiency in one of China's most energy-intensive sectors.
