At the 11th plenary session of the Shaanxi Provincial Party Committee, the provincial government announced plans to further develop the energy and chemical industry in northern Shaanxi and ensure a smooth transition for the Weibei energy base. The focus will be on expanding the coal chemical industry, with strong emphasis on projects such as coal-to-methanol, coal-to-oil, and coal-to-olefins. These initiatives aim to leverage Shaanxi's abundant coal resources and transform them into high-value chemical products.
Governor Yuan Chunqing highlighted that while Shaanxi continues to expand its production capacity in coal, oil, and natural gas, it is also making significant strides in deep processing and technological upgrades. The province has clear resource advantages and favorable conditions for developing its coal chemical industry. Looking ahead, Shaanxi plans to accelerate the development of coal-based chemical projects, including methanol, synthetic oil, and olefins.
By the end of the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, or by 2012, the province aims to achieve a total output of 10 million tons of coal-based methanol, 1 million tons of coal-to-oil, and 3 million tons of coal-to-olefins. These targets reflect the strategic direction of the province in building a sustainable and advanced energy chemical industry.
In 2008, Shaanxi received approval for the first phase of a major project with Dow Chemical Co., Ltd., marking an important step in international collaboration. Progress on the Yankuang Coal Liquefaction industrial demonstration project also accelerated, and the 1-million-ton ethylene project was actively promoted, signaling continued momentum in the region’s energy and chemical sector.
