The large-scale multi-nozzle opposed coal-water slurry gasification technology, jointly developed by East China University of Science and Technology and Yankuang Group Co., Ltd., secured a major win at the end of last year. It successfully outcompeted several foreign coal gasification technologies to be selected for Anhui Huayi Chemical Co., Ltd.'s 600,000 tons/year methanol project. This achievement follows the successful two-year operation of the coal chemical demonstration unit at Yankuang Guotai Chemical Co., Ltd., marking the technology’s growing maturity. With thirteen companies now adopting it, the technology is proving its reliability and industrial potential.
In July 2005, the industrial demonstration plant of the multi-nozzle opposed coal-water slurry gasification technology was successfully commissioned at Yankuang Guotai Chemical Co., Ltd. The entire process was activated in one go, achieving a successful industrialization milestone. After over two years of continuous operation, the system demonstrated excellent performance and advanced technical indicators. Compared to similar foreign technologies, this method offers greater operational flexibility, superior efficiency, and stable performance. It is particularly well-suited for large-scale gasification units (over 10,000 tons of coal per day), with a reasonable investment cost and lower patent licensing fees. This laid a solid foundation for the widespread application of large-scale coal gasification technology in China. The Cathay Pacific demonstration project was awarded the National Quality Engineering Gold Medal in 2007, further validating its excellence.
The successful operation of the demonstration project signifies that the technology has reached a mature stage and is now capable of competing effectively with international alternatives. As a result, more users are showing interest. So far, the technology has been adopted by 12 companies, including Shandong Hualu Hengsheng Chemical Co., Ltd., Shenhua Ningmei Group, and Ningbo Wanhua Polyurethane Co., Ltd. A total of 30 gasifiers (including spare units) have been ordered, with a combined daily coal processing capacity exceeding 30,000 tons.
Moreover, the technology has attracted attention from numerous international companies, including those from the United States, Canada, and India. These companies are exploring the possibility of using the technology to build large-scale coal and petroleum coke gasification systems, highlighting its global appeal and potential for future expansion.
