The large-scale multi-nozzle opposed coal-water slurry gasification technology, jointly developed by East China University of Science and Technology and Yankuang Group Co., Ltd., successfully secured a major contract with Anhui Huayi Chemical Co., Ltd. for its 600,000 tons/year methanol project. This achievement came after intense competition against several foreign coal gasification technologies. The decision to adopt this technology followed the successful two-year operation of Yankuang Guotai Chemical's demonstration unit, marking a key milestone in the technology's maturity and acceptance.
In July 2005, the industrial demonstration plant of the multi-nozzle opposed coal-water slurry gasification technology was successfully started at Yankuang Guotai Chemical, with the entire process activated in one go, achieving a breakthrough in industrialization. After over two years of continuous operation, the system demonstrated excellent performance and advanced technical indicators. Compared to similar foreign technologies, this solution offers greater operational flexibility, more advanced process parameters, and stable system performance. It is particularly well-suited for large-scale gasification systems (over 10,000 tons of coal per day), with a reasonable investment scale and lower patent licensing fees. This laid a solid foundation for the widespread application of large-scale coal gasification technology in China.
Cathay Pacific’s demonstration project received the National Quality Engineering Gold Medal in 2007, further validating the technology’s quality and reliability. The successful operation of the demonstration unit proved that the technology has reached a mature stage, enabling it to compete effectively with international alternatives. As a result, more companies are showing interest in adopting it.
So far, the technology has been applied by 12 companies, including Shandong Hualu Hengsheng Chemical Co., Ltd., Shenhua Ningmei Group, and Ningbo Wanhua Polyurethane Co., Ltd. These companies have collectively applied for 30 gasifiers (including spare units), with a total designed daily coal processing capacity exceeding 30,000 tons.
It is also reported that numerous companies from the United States, Canada, and India have expressed strong interest in this technology, planning to use it for building large-scale coal and petroleum coke gasification facilities. This growing global interest highlights the technology's potential to become a leading solution in the field of coal gasification worldwide.
