The Chicago Tribune recently published an article highlighting the latest developments in the construction of the new Glenview Fire Department headquarters. Located near the village hall campus on 1215 Waukegan Road, the project is currently in the final design phase.
Originally, the fire station was based at 1815 Glenview Road, but it had to relocate due to a planned four-story development between Pine and Church streets. The former police station, which had been vacant for several years, was initially considered for renovation. However, after a detailed cost analysis, the village decided to demolish the old building and construct a new one from scratch, according to Village Manager Todd Hileman.
“There was no significant budgetary difference between rehabbing and starting fresh,†Hileman explained. The project is estimated to cost around $5.5 million and is expected to be finalized by the village trustees in August. Currently, the demolition and site work are being bid out, with the former police station scheduled for removal in September.
During a July 16 meeting, trustees directed architects to consider expanding the station to accommodate three fire trucks. They also reviewed different roof options that could impact the overall cost. Trustee Michael Jenny supported the expansion, suggesting an increase in bunk beds from six to nine. Most trustees favored a shingled roof over a more expensive metal one, despite its shorter lifespan.
Fire Chief Wayne Globerger expressed interest in adding a half bay for the battalion chief’s vehicle, allowing easier access during winter emergencies. However, he noted that the department would adapt to whatever plans are approved.
