The Daily Herald recently published an article detailing ongoing discussions in Rolling Meadows regarding the potential relocation of the downtown fire station. The city’s leadership is set to make a decision in April—whether to move the current downtown station, repair it, or rebuild it entirely. During a recent council meeting, officials pledged to make a final determination after hearing a proposal from Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. According to his recommendation, the downtown fire station should be relocated to New Wilke Road near Central Road, while the second station would eventually be moved to Hicks Road between Euclid Avenue and Kirchoff Road. Franzgrote argued that relocating both stations would optimize emergency response times across the entire city. He pointed out that New Wilke Road, located on the eastern edge of Rolling Meadows, presents some political challenges with neighboring communities. However, it remains the only north-south street east of Route 53 that stretches all the way from Euclid Avenue to Golf Road. According to department data, 85% of fire calls occur east of Route 53 or just west of the highway. Additionally, the city’s mutual aid agreements with nearby towns like Arlington Heights and Palatine were factored into the recommendation. The existing downtown fire station at 3111 Meadows Drive is 50 years old, and local aldermen have described its condition as an “embarrassment†to the city. In contrast, the other station at 2455 Plum Grove Road, located west of Route 53, is 33 years old and in better shape. Rolling Meadows has been debating the future of its fire stations for years. Earlier, the city was offered a grant to build a third station, but due to financial constraints during tough economic times, the council decided not to pursue the project. This time around, the aldermen asked Chief Franzgrote to develop recommendations that focus on maintaining two stations without increasing staffing levels. He presented five different location scenarios to the council, which are now available on the city's website: ci.rolling-meadows.il.us.
