On November 18th, Changan’s first mini-car “Ben Ben” will be announced at the Beijing International Auto Show. This car is not only good for Chang'an people, but also received widespread praise from the media. While the historical trend of building an innovative country is about to set off a climax, Benben once again attracted the attention of the government and related institutions to Changan's independent innovation.

On October 29th, the Development Research Center of the State Council held a “China Automotive Industry High-Level Forum” in Chongqing and announced their investigation reports on Changan’s independent innovation activities in the past three months. Officials and scholars of the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission and other departments reviewed the “Changan model” and expressed their views on how to promote the autonomy of Chinese auto companies.

The research group of the Development Research Center of the State Council believes that since the reform and opening up, Changan Automobile Group, which has developed from technological innovation, has become a new force in promoting the rapid development of China's automobile industry. It has become China's fourth-largest automotive group, the leader in the mini-vehicle industry, and the domestic automobile industry. The market share reached 10.96%. Since it entered the automotive industry in 1981, the Changan Group has formed a unique model of Changan Auto's independent innovation through continuous and unremitting efforts. The Chang'an model can be highly summarized as: “Relying on the support of the national industrial policy, taking the enterprise as the main body of innovation, depending on foreign joint ventures and partners as resources, in the tripartite linkage of the government, foreign joint venture partners and enterprises, through the gradual innovation of technological innovation. Upgrade and build an independent innovation system that focuses on me to achieve the cultivation and promotion of the company's core competitiveness."

The Development Research Center of the State Council believes that the Chang'an model has the following two major connotations:

First, the core of the Chang'an model is "independent innovation based on me." Changan, in its interactions with foreign joint venture partners, develops itself through the use of resources such as capital, management, technology, and knowledge that can be used at home and abroad. It attaches great importance to digestion, absorption, and re-innovation, and turns it into a reality product as soon as possible, thus forming its own Knowledge capital.

Second, the key to the Chang'an model is to build an independent development and innovation system. This system includes the following contents: 1. Strategic advancement of a moderately advanced strategy; 2. Organizational system consisting of product planning layer-core development layer-production technology support layer-external resource layer; 3. "Retire to death", "learning, innovation, dedication, and people" constitute the corporate culture; 4, invest 1 billion yuan to establish their own core R & D institutions Chang'an Automobile Engineering Research Institute, also established overseas branch centers, Shanghai Branch; 5, the formation of the design, engineering design, analysis and optimization, prototype manufacturing and experimental verification and other five capabilities. 6. To build a global digital design system network that links Eurasia to Europe;

7, has formed a more than 800 people's product core R & D team and more than 1,000 technical personnel.

Perseverance, gradual and independent innovation

Experts at the conference unanimously agreed that the reason why Changan Automobile has been able to develop rapidly in the past 25 years is that in recent years it has benefited from its own brands, overall capabilities, human resources, development processes, and intellectual property rights. It is thanks to Changan’s continuous focus on learning about foreign cars. The company's core technologies, advanced management, and cultural concepts are all used for their own purposes. They have gone through a process of technology introduction, digestion and absorption, secondary innovation, joint development based on me, and independent development based on me. The formation of the Chang’an model is not a matter of overnight, but is gradually formed through the gradual upgrading of innovations, which cannot be separated from the precipitation of time, the exploration of experience, and the process of gathering resources.

Experts believe that although the Chang’an model has high investment and high risk, it has the potential and scope to achieve leapfrogging by mastering core technologies and possessing the ability to develop core technologies. If only relying on technology import to carry out imitation or cooperation innovation, it can only achieve a small leap. The Chang'an model proves that only self-innovation based on me can realize the leap-forward development with the largest and most valuable value. Therefore, the Chang'an model has implications for China's transformation from a "car giant" to a "car power."

Chang'an's "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" Innovation Goals

At the meeting, Xu Liuping, president of Changan Automobile Group, disclosed that by 2010, Changan Automobile’s vehicle platform will have to reach 6 or more, and its production capacity will be close to 1.8 million, of which the proportion of self-owned brand cars will exceed 50%, and exports will be 80,000. More than 100 billion yuan. The total share of various Changan vehicles in the domestic automobile market should reach 15%. Among them, the sedan, micro-vehicles and commercial vehicles in their respective market segments have to occupy 13%, 38% and 6% respectively, micro-vehicles to maintain market share of the first position.

To this end, Xu Liuping said that Chang’an is currently vigorously advancing its “leading business plan” in terms of products, markets, systems, culture, and costs. In the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, Chang’an’s R&D investment will generally reach sales revenue. More than 5% of them plan to invest 5.6 billion yuan in the development of new products and launch 32 new models in succession. Among them, there are 16 cars that have completely independent intellectual property rights, and their displacement covers 0.7 to 2.0 liters. Through continuous independent innovation, during the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, Chang’an Group will achieve its overall development goal of “multiplying over one million in four years and 100 billion in revenue in six years”, improving independent innovation capabilities, accelerating structural adjustment, and transforming growth patterns.
