FPL Energy, a subsidiary of the U.S. FPL Group, recently announced that it will partner with Citrus Energy of Florida to develop the first commercial facility for producing ethanol from citrus peels. This innovative project marks a significant step in utilizing agricultural waste as a renewable energy source. The cellulosic ethanol plant, which will be owned and operated by FPL Energy, is expected to generate 4 million gallons of ethanol annually. Located in Florida, where numerous citrus processors are based, the facility aims to leverage local resources efficiently. According to reports, the ethanol produced from citrus waste and other biomass is not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective. It's anticipated that this process could enable Florida to produce over 60 million gallons of fuel each year, potentially replacing about 1% of the state’s annual gasoline consumption. This initiative supports Florida’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable energy solutions. FPL Energy is a major player in the clean energy sector, supplying power through natural gas, wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear sources. The company is one of the largest developers of wind energy in the U.S., operating 49 wind facilities across 15 states. As the leading electricity service provider in the country, FPL Energy has an annual revenue of nearly $16 billion, reflecting its strong market presence and commitment to energy innovation and sustainability.
