The future of mobility is at a crossroads, and the debate is heating up. While it’s clear that the internal combustion engine (ICE) is on its way out, the path forward remains uncertain. The direction of this transformation depends heavily on innovation in new technologies and how quickly automakers can bring them to market. Today, battery electric vehicles (EVs) are leading the charge, but many industry experts believe hydrogen fuel cell vehicles also have a role to play in shaping the future of transportation. At last month’s **REVOLUTION Digital #2**, we had the opportunity to speak with some of the most influential minds in clean technology. Their insights revealed a compelling discussion on what the future might look like—and how both EVs and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles could fit into that vision. Here are four key predictions from the electrifying debate: --- **Prediction One: The Future Is Battery Electric** Michael Hajesch, CEO and Managing Director of **Ionity**, a leading European charging network with over 400 stations powered by renewable energy, believes the future is firmly in the hands of battery electric vehicles. “Electric vehicles are here to stay,” he said. “Over the past decade, we’ve seen an explosion in EV options—more than 200 models now available in Europe. There are massive investments in infrastructure and in the entire EV ecosystem. This isn’t something for 2050 or 2060—it’s happening now, between 2025 and 2030. The future is battery electric.” --- **Prediction Two: The Future Is the Best Mix** Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, Secretary General of **Hydrogen Europe**, argues that the future won’t be dominated by one technology alone. “My view is that the future will be a mix of technologies,” he explained. “It’s not about choosing between hydrogen and batteries—it’s about using each where they work best. Hydrogen-electric cars are still electric, just with a different power source. In urban environments, batteries make more sense. But for long-distance travel or heavy transport, hydrogen has advantages. We need to collaborate and find the optimal solution for system efficiency and climate impact.” --- **Prediction Three: Battery Electric Vehicles Are Here to Stay** Mathieu Bonnet, CEO of **Allego**, one of Europe’s largest charging solution providers, sees a bright future for EVs. “Clean energy is essential, and both electricity and hydrogen can help us get there,” he said. “I think the key is optimizing different forms of transportation—from personal cars to shared mobility and even autonomous vehicles. Digitalization is going to play a big role in making this happen. And for me, digitalization is linked to electricity. So while I don’t know exactly what the future holds, I’m confident that electric vehicles will remain central to it.” --- **Prediction Four: Battery Electric Vehicles Powered by Clean Energy Are the Future** Michiel Langezaal, founder and CEO of **Fastned**, a major fast-charging network across Europe, sees no viable alternative to electric vehicles when it comes to sustainability. “If you start with solar panels and connect them directly to your car, you can drive around 5 km per kWh of solar energy,” he said. “But with hydrogen, you lose half the energy in the process—first converting it to hydrogen, then compressing it, and finally using it in a fuel cell. That’s inefficient. For me, the future is electric. We have the tools to solve the climate crisis, and we should use them now.” --- So, which side are you on? While three out of the four experts leaned toward battery electric vehicles, the consensus was clear: the future may not be a battle between EVs and hydrogen, but rather a collaboration. As Chatzimarkakis put it, the best path forward is the best mix of technologies. If you want to join the conversation, don’t miss **REVOLUTION Digital #3**, coming back on December 8th.
