The future of mobility is a topic of intense debate, and as the world moves away from internal combustion engines, the question remains: which technology will lead the way? While battery electric vehicles (EVs) are currently dominating the market, many experts believe hydrogen fuel cell vehicles also have a place in the future. At **REVOLUTION Digital #2**, we brought together some of the brightest minds in clean tech to explore what’s next for transportation. Here are four predictions from the electrifying debate: **Prediction One: The Future Is Battery Electric** Michael Hajesch, CEO of **Ionity**, one of Europe’s leading EV charging networks, believes the future is clearly electric. With over 400 fast-charging stations across 24 countries, Ionity is helping drive the transition to EVs. Hajesch argues that with more than 200 EV and plug-in hybrid models on the European market today, the shift is not just happening — it's accelerating. He points to massive investments in infrastructure and the full EV ecosystem, predicting that by 2030, battery electric vehicles will be the standard. **Prediction Two: The Future Is the Best Mix** Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, Secretary General of **Hydrogen Europe**, takes a different stance. While he acknowledges the importance of EVs, he believes the future lies in a balanced mix of technologies. "We shouldn’t pit hydrogen against batteries," he says. "Both can play a role depending on the use case." For short urban trips, batteries are more efficient, but for long-haul transport or heavy-duty vehicles, hydrogen offers advantages. He emphasizes the need for collaboration between technologies to achieve the most sustainable and efficient system. **Prediction Three: Battery Electric Vehicles Are Here to Stay** Mathieu Bonnet, CEO of **Allego**, a major European charging provider, agrees that EVs are here to stay. He highlights the growing role of clean energy in shaping the future of mobility. "Whether it’s electricity or hydrogen, both can help us reach our sustainability goals," he says. Bonnet sees a future where digitalization plays a key role in optimizing transportation — from shared mobility to autonomous driving. For him, the EV revolution isn't just about cars, but about rethinking how we move people and goods. **Prediction Four: Clean Energy-Powered EVs Are the Way Forward** Michiel Langezaal, founder of **Fastned**, a leader in fast-charging infrastructure, is a strong advocate for EVs powered by renewable energy. He compares the efficiency of solar-powered EVs to hydrogen systems, arguing that hydrogen involves significant energy loss at every stage. "For me, the future is clear — we need to go electric," he says. "We have the technology, and it's time to act." So, which side are you on? While three out of four experts leaned toward battery electric vehicles, the consensus was clear: the future might not be one or the other — it could be both. As the conversation continues, events like **REVOLUTION Digital #3** will bring together industry leaders to discuss the next steps in sustainable mobility.
