On Friday, March 15th, 2019, I witnessed an interesting event at the Chapel Hill Golf Club in McHenry, Illinois. This building, which had been serving as a clubhouse and restaurant, was intentionally set ablaze by the local fire department as part of their training exercises. From what I understand, they had conducted several drills there prior to the final burn-down. This particular day marked the culmination of their activities, with the structure being fully demolished through controlled burning. As far as I know, no new construction is planned for the site. There weren’t any major firefighting operations to observe, but I did get to witness some fascinating fire behavior and conditions. One particularly unusual occurrence was the collapse of the front entrance’s overhang, which I unfortunately missed seeing in real-time and only caught afterward. It was intriguing to watch how the tanker was set up, though it didn’t play a significant role in the operation. You can check out the video and more images here:

Attached are some photos capturing the event:

The above images showcase the dramatic transformation of the vacant golf club building into ashes. The fire department used this opportunity not just to practice extinguishing techniques but also to simulate realistic scenarios that might occur during actual emergencies. It’s always educational to see how such exercises unfold, even if the focus isn’t on traditional firefighting tasks.
I hope these visuals give you a better idea of what happened that day. If anyone has further insights or stories about similar events, feel free to share them!
