Work is progressing steadily on the construction of the brand-new Palatine Fire Department Station 81 located at 1215 N. Quentin Road, just south of Dundee Road. This upcoming facility is less than a mile away from the existing, somewhat outdated station that the Palatine Fire Department took over from the Palatine Rural Fire District back in January 2001. Once the firefighters move into their shiny new building, the Palatine Masonic Temple plans to occupy the old fire station at 455 Dundee Road, which was constructed in the early 1980s.
The new station will offer approximately 8,700 square feet of space, providing ample room for Quint 81 and Ambulance 81, which currently operates as a jump company. One notable difference between this new location and the current station is the layout. Unlike the current facility, the new station 81 will be set further back from the road with a longer driveway. Additionally, the apparatus will exit onto a four-lane road featuring a central median. This setup will provide easier and safer access to the roadway compared to the tight confines of Dundee Road, which is frequently congested and experiences daily backups. Larry Shapiro captured these details in his photographs.
The older station, which currently serves as Station 81, originally belonged to the Palatine Rural Fire District. It's a testament to how times change and how infrastructure evolves to meet modern needs. As the new station takes shape, it’s clear that Palatine is investing in its future, ensuring that emergency services can operate more efficiently and safely than ever before. This transition not only modernizes firefighting operations but also opens up opportunities for other community organizations like the Masonic Temple to utilize existing spaces.
While progress continues on-site, residents are eagerly anticipating the completion of this project, which promises to enhance both public safety and local infrastructure. It’s an exciting time for Palatine as the city moves forward with such a significant development in its emergency services facilities.
