Dan McInerney from the Oak Park and Countryside Fire Departments shared a link with us to the Chicago Fire Department's (CFD) website, where they’ve been posting regular updates about their new fireboat. This is exciting news, as the current fireboat, the Victor L. Schlaeger, has been in service for six decades and desperately needs replacement.
Here’s what I gathered from the link:
The Chicago Fire Department is set to acquire a brand-new NFPA Type III Fireboat that will be capable of operating year-round in both Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. This state-of-the-art vessel will not only handle traditional firefighting tasks but also respond to more complex scenarios like chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) incidents, hazmat decontaminations, dive operations, and various other water-related emergencies.
The construction progress has been steady so far. As of June 11, 2010, most of the hull structure has already been assembled, and the hull plating has been fitted. Simultaneously, the aluminum deckhouse is being constructed alongside the hull. Moving back to March 1, 2010, the initial stages of construction had just begun, with the cut steel sections for the hull arriving at the boatyard. At that point, the hull structure was still under assembly.
The contract to build this cutting-edge fireboat was awarded to Hike Metal Products on June 20, 2009. Construction officially started in early 2010, with expectations for delivery by 2011.
For those interested in staying updated, it’s worth checking the link frequently for any new developments or photos. Given how vital this new fireboat will be for the city, it’s bound to be a game-changer for emergency response efforts along Chicago's waterways.
I’ll keep an eye on these updates and share anything noteworthy as it comes out. Let me know if you'd like further details!
