The MABAS Division 27 recently welcomed its second department, South Chicago Heights. This small but dedicated department covers an area of 1.5 square miles with just one firehouse. They operate two ambulances and two fire engines to serve their community. Their ambulances come from reputable manufacturers like Wheeled Coach and Osage, while their fire engines are from Crimson and American LaFrance, which was later acquired by Freightliner. One interesting fact about this department is that they use a Type II style ambulance, which isn’t very common around here. The images you see here were generously shared by Jack Connors, who captured some great shots of their equipment. Looking at the photos, the first image shows the South Chicago Heights station located at 2729 Jackson Avenue. It’s a straightforward setup, typical for smaller departments focused on efficiency and service. Next up, we have a close look at their Type II ambulance. These vehicles are designed differently compared to the more conventional Type I models, often preferred for urban or suburban operations due to their layout and functionality. Lastly, there's the American LaFrance Century pumper. Known for its robust build and reliability, this engine plays a crucial role in their firefighting capabilities. While these images give us a glimpse into the resources available to South Chicago Heights, it’s worth noting how such departments manage with limited personnel yet deliver essential services effectively. As someone who appreciates local emergency response setups, I found these pictures particularly fascinating. Thanks again to Jack Connors for providing these insights into their operations!
