Firefighters from Arlington Heights, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, and Mount Prospect were called to 1929 N Spruce Terrace in Arlington Heights around 8:20 AM on Thursday, February 4, 2021, after reports of a house fire. As the crews made their way to the scene, they were informed that two residents might still be inside, and neighbors had mentioned that the home was in a hoarder condition, making the situation more dangerous. Upon arrival, Engine 2 confirmed flames at the rear of the house. They immediately set up a hydrant down the street, followed by Palatine Engine 83, which positioned itself in front of the residence. Firefighters entered the home to search for the occupants and found two adults. Both individuals were quickly rescued and taken to ambulances for immediate medical attention. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, but crews continued to work on extinguishing hot spots and smoldering embers throughout the cluttered interior. The home’s condition, filled with accumulated items, made the firefighting process more challenging and prolonged. Unfortunately, it was later confirmed that neither of the occupants who were pulled from the house survived the incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and local authorities are working with the community to provide further details as they become available. A photo of the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, shows the intense nature of the blaze and the efforts of emergency responders.
