Bringing the Elios 2 and Elios 3 to Firefighting

When first responders arrive at an emergency scene, they often have no idea what they're facing. The ability to adapt quickly and think creatively is essential in these high-pressure situations. One of the most critical aspects of arriving on a scene is gaining situational awareness—understanding the environment and potential hazards as quickly as possible.

Traditional methods of gathering information can be slow and sometimes dangerous. That's where the Elios 2 and Elios 3 come in. These drones are designed for rapid deployment, offering fast and accurate data collection that helps teams make informed decisions under pressure.

Key Benefits in a Nutshell

Speed

The Elios 3 allows for quick situational awareness flights lasting less than 10 minutes, delivering critical information rapidly and enabling a swift response to the situation.

Safety

The Elios 3 can be used to identify life-threatening situations and help plan safe entry points before any personnel go into the area.

Accountability

After an incident, the 3D model created by the Elios 3 can be used to evaluate the response and improve future operations.

Access

The Elios 3 can enter hazardous environments before people, checking if it’s safe to proceed and providing vital information for planning next steps.

Modernizing how emergency data is collected has become a key focus for fire departments around the world. In the Netherlands, Team Digital Exploration (TDE) is at the forefront of this movement. Formed in 2018 as a collaboration between the Unified Fire Brigade (GB) and the Safety Region of Rotterdam-Rijnmond (VRR), TDE is trained to gather and share critical information quickly and effectively.

TDE uses drones like the Elios 2 and Elios 3 to scout dangerous areas, allowing first responders to make better-informed decisions. “We don’t have to send people into a building without doing a scouting flight first,” says Robbert Heinecke, national manager at TDE. “The reconnaissance we do with the Elios is a game-changer.”

From firefighting to hazardous material incidents, TDE has been involved in a wide range of emergency responses. Their work includes assessing structural damage, searching for missing persons, and monitoring pollution. By using the Elios drones, they can safely collect data even in challenging environments, such as smoke-filled buildings or confined spaces.

In some cases, when visibility is limited due to heavy smoke, TDE relies on the LiDAR capabilities of the Elios 3. This technology provides real-time scans that help build a clearer picture of the scene. After the incident, the data is processed using photogrammetry software like PIX4Dmapper to create detailed 2D and 3D models of the site.

Looking ahead, TDE aims to help other fire departments establish similar drone response units. Their efforts demonstrate how drones like the Elios 2 and Elios 3 are transforming emergency response, making it safer, faster, and more efficient.

Whether it’s for initial reconnaissance or post-incident analysis, the Elios series is proving to be an invaluable tool for firefighters and emergency responders. As technology continues to evolve, so too will the ways in which drones are used to protect lives and save communities.
