Due to these challenging conditions, using brush rigs was impossible, and firefighters initially accessed the area on foot until the Cook County Forest Preserve District Wildland Team arrived. Several trucks with skid-mounted units joined the effort, along with an ATV equipped with a small tank and booster line.
Larry Shapiro, who spent a few hours at the scene, captured several photos. One image shows Lake Zurich Engine 4 responding to the blaze. They connected to a hydrant and stretched a hose line of several hundred feet into the grass to begin suppression efforts.
The Palatine and Lake Zurich teams managed to stretch multiple hundred feet of attack line to target the flames and protect nearby residential and commercial properties. As the situation evolved, the intense fire spread eastward, posing a significant threat to several businesses along Rand Road.
The heavy winds made firefighting efforts particularly difficult, pushing the fire towards new areas of fuel. After committing all their suppression resources to the incident and working for over three hours, Palatine initiated a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm to request additional personnel and coverage for their own district.
Throughout the day, the combination of low humidity, extremely dry conditions, and high winds created perfect conditions for the fire to spread rapidly. Additional units were dispatched to ensure that the flames didn’t reach any structures. Despite these challenges, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the fire, ultimately preventing it from reaching any buildings.
By around 10 PM, the fire was successfully contained, and the box alarm was canceled. The scene was chaotic, with firefighters using every resource at their disposal to combat the blaze. Photos from the event showcase the immense effort put forth by both the Palatine and Lake Zurich departments, as well as the Cook County Forest Preserve District Wildland Team.
More images will be uploaded in a gallery on Sunday, along with a video capturing the intensity of the firefighting operation. It was an exhausting but necessary effort to keep the community safe from this dangerous wildfire.
Saturday morning, the Palatine Fire Department received a call about a brush fire in the Cook County Forest Preserve region, roughly located between Lake-Cook Road and Rand Road. Battalion 8 from Palatine set up operations on Dee Road, which runs west of Rand and off Lake-Cook. They arrived with Engine 82 and Lake Zurich Engine 4. Upon arrival, they discovered flames spreading through tall grass across an area largely covered in marshlands, with nearly two feet of soggy ground making it difficult to navigate.
