SAN FRANCISCO, April 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Autodesk released its 2023 State of Design & Make report, which highlights insights and strategies from over 2,500 global business leaders and experts in industries that shape the physical and digital world. Despite a turbulent global environment marked by economic uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, and environmental concerns, these leaders report a heightened sense of resilience within their respective sectors.
According to the report, 79% of respondents feel the world is more unpredictable now compared to just three years ago. This sentiment is particularly pronounced in Europe, where 86% of respondents expressed similar views. Key drivers of this uncertainty include ongoing conflicts, inflationary pressures, energy crises, and lingering impacts from the pandemic.
Encouragingly, nearly 60% of respondents believe their companies are adequately prepared to face future challenges. Interestingly, leaders from digitally advanced firms were 20 percentage points more confident about their readiness compared to their less digitally mature counterparts.
One of the most pressing issues highlighted in the report is the struggle to attract and retain talent. A staggering 48% of respondents identified this as their top concern, while 64% cited skill gaps as a hindrance to growth. In response, many digitally mature companies are prioritizing employee training and upskilling programs. A remarkable 93% of respondents emphasized the importance of fostering future-ready skills such as technological expertise, collaboration, and regulatory awareness.

Sustainability emerged as another crucial focus area. Eighty percent of respondents agreed that adopting sustainable practices is vital for long-term success, with 82% acknowledging customer influence on their sustainability initiatives. Nearly 90% reported implementing changes to enhance sustainability, such as reducing waste, utilizing recycled materials, and designing eco-friendly products.

The report also reveals that digitally mature companies are thriving amidst the chaos. These firms, which leverage digital tools to optimize operations, outperform their peers in areas like cost reduction, innovation acceleration, and service delivery speed. Since 2020, the performance gap between digitally mature and less mature companies has widened significantly.
Looking ahead, digitally mature firms plan to invest heavily in technologies that improve project outcomes, foster product innovation, and develop new offerings. They recognize that their future growth hinges on embracing digital tools—a sentiment echoed by 79% of respondents.
