A firefighter from Des Plaines, working in the fire prevention bureau, noticed smoke coming from the eaves of a home at 501 S. Mt. Prospect Road just before 2 p.m. on Monday. After speaking with people outside the house, he contacted the RED Center to report a potential fire. He then entered the residence to urge two individuals to evacuate and later returned for a secondary search to ensure no one was left behind.
The incident prompted a large-scale response, including three engine companies, two chief officers, and four Des Plaines ambulances. Additional units arrived from Mount Prospect, including a chief, a truck, and an ambulance, while Prospect Heights sent a chief and a truck. The Wheeling Fire Department provided an engine, and the Niles Fire Department contributed a truck. Notably, Des Plaines Battalion 61 and Truck 61 were undergoing training at NIPSTA and responded from that location.
Firefighters determined that the fire originated in the second-floor bathroom. However, by the time suppression crews arrived, the entire second-floor attic of the split-level home was fully involved, indicating rapid fire spread. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
