On Monday morning, January 8, 2018, Chicago firefighters responded to a serious fire at 4828 W. Van Buren, which was initially classified as a Still & Box Alarm. The incident was later upgraded to a 2-11, indicating a significant fire with potential for rapid spread. An EMS Plan 1 was also activated, signaling the need for immediate medical assistance and even a Mayday alert, highlighting the danger faced by both firefighters and residents.
The fire caused heavy smoke to pour from the structure, creating hazardous conditions and prompting emergency crews to arrive quickly. Firefighters in full personal protective equipment (PPE) were seen working through thick smoke, using high-pressure deck guns to control the blaze. Multiple units were dispatched, including Squad 2A, one of the city’s most experienced fire companies.
Residents in the area were advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed due to the heavy smoke. Local authorities worked closely with emergency services to ensure public safety and assess the damage. While no casualties were reported at the time, the situation remained tense as crews worked to fully extinguish the fire and secure the scene.
