The Oak Park Fire Department received a report of a partial building collapse this afternoon in the 200 block of Harrison Street, specifically between 201 and 211, at the southwest corner of Harrison and Lombard Avenue. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene to assess the situation.
Dan McInerney, a local journalist, was on-site and shared detailed photos and a firsthand account of the incident:
"Oak Park emergency services responded with three fire engines, two ambulances, a command van, and the Mabas Division 11 Technical Rescue Vehicle to a reported building collapse at the intersection of Lombard and Harrison at 1:50 p.m. Upon arrival, crews found a one-story, L-shaped commercial building measuring approximately 150 feet wide by 100 feet deep. A section of the brick façade along about 100 feet of Harrison Street had collapsed onto the sidewalk. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this typically busy commercial area. However, two vehicles parked in front of the affected zone sustained minor damage from falling debris.
The eastern portion of the building had been under renovation for several months. Firefighters conducted a thorough search of the debris pile along the sidewalk to ensure no one was trapped. The operation lasted roughly 90 minutes, during which crews secured the structure and utilities before handing over the site to the building department for further assessment."
Several images from the scene have been shared, showing the extent of the damage and the efforts of first responders. While the cause of the collapse is still under investigation, authorities are working to determine if structural issues or construction activities played a role.
