The Northwest Herald reported on a fire that broke out Thursday night in downtown McHenry, caused by downed power lines due to strong winds during the season's first winter storm. According to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, both a sports bar and a residence were affected. Firefighters were called to Windy City Wings, located at 1266 N. Green St., around 9 p.m. Thursday after reports of flames coming from the building. Upon arrival, crews found sparks and flames originating from an arched utility pole and fallen wires that had landed on the front of the structure. “Everything was like a fireworks show,” said Fire Battalion Chief Mike Majercik. “While ComEd was cutting off the power, the fire spread into the building. The high winds made it really hard to control.” Despite the intense conditions, firefighters focused on protecting the adjacent business, which they managed to save. However, the bar and grill at Windy City Wings were completely destroyed. Jeff Rudolph, who shared some photos from the scene, noted that this was a third alarm fire. He described the two-story corner building as a complete loss, with the fire starting from a downed power line on the rear wall. More images are available on Facebook through Box Alarm Photography. Several photos captured the emergency response, including fire trucks setting up for master stream operations and firefighters working on defensive tactics. One photo shows a Lake Villa fire truck preparing for water operations, while another captures the intense efforts of the McHenry Township Fire Department. Additional shots highlight the scale of the blaze and the challenges faced by first responders on the scene.
