The Northwest Herald reported on a fire that broke out in downtown McHenry on Thursday night. According to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, the incident was caused by downed power lines due to strong winds during the season's first winter storm. The blaze affected both a sports bar and a residence.
Firefighters were called to Windy City Wings, located at 1266 N. Green St., around 9 p.m. Thursday after reports of flames coming from the building. Upon arrival, crews found sparks and flames shooting from an arched utility pole, with wires falling onto the front of the structure. "It was like a fireworks show," said Fire Battalion Chief Mike Majercik. "While ComEd was shutting off the power, the fire spread into the building. The high winds made it extremely difficult to control."
Despite the intense conditions, firefighters managed to focus on saving the adjacent business. Unfortunately, the bar and grill were completely destroyed, but the neighboring establishment was spared, according to Majercik.
Jeff Rudolph, who shared photos from the scene, described the event as a third alarm fire on December 20, 2012. He noted that the fire started from a downed power line on the rear wall of the two-story corner bar and grill, which ultimately became a total loss. Several photos from the scene show emergency crews in action, including Lake Villa’s truck setting up for master stream operations, defensive firefighting efforts, and an engine from the McHenry Township Fire Department responding to the call. These images provide a vivid look at the scale and intensity of the fire.
