Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Two individuals, including a man in a wheelchair, were safely rescued by firefighters from the St. Charles Fire Department after being trapped on the second floor of a burning townhome on Saturday night, according to Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet.

The incident occurred around 11:47 p.m. at the 1700 block of Cumberland Green Drive in St. Charles. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions and found an elderly man confined to a wheelchair inside a bedroom, while his son was hanging over the balcony, desperately seeking help. “Heavy smoke was pushing over him from the sliding glass doors — the father was still inside the building,” Schelstreet explained.

Firefighters quickly deployed a portable ladder to rescue the two men. A firefighter reached the balcony and carried the father down the ladder, while another helped the son escape the unit. The operation was swift and effective, with additional support coming from fire departments in Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago, and South Elgin.

This account comes from John Tulipano:

At approximately 23:45 on May 30th, 2015, St. Charles Fire Department responded to a reported fire at 1742 Cumberland Green, where people were said to be trapped. Engine 102 arrived first and reported heavy fire from the second floor of a two-story, 10-unit frame structure (condo/apartment complex), with one person hanging from a balcony. Engine 102 successfully rescued one individual from the second-floor balcony and discovered a second person in a wheelchair inside a first-floor bedroom.

Fire companies worked quickly to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjacent units. By the time I arrived, the fire was well under control. One civilian was taken to the hospital, while another was treated on-site.
