An explosion at Arens Controls, located at 3602 N. Kennicott Ave. in Arlington Heights, occurred this morning, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to several others. Emergency responders were quickly on the scene, with an EMS Box Alarm activated to bring in additional ambulances from nearby areas such as Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Palatine, and Prospect Heights to assist with the injured.
A photo taken by Larry Shapiro shows ambulances lined up along Kennicott Avenue, preparing to transport victims to local hospitals. The blast caused a significant disruption, sending debris into a nearby parking lot and damaging around 20 vehicles. However, officials confirmed that the chemical fumes released did not pose a threat to residents in the surrounding area.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the explosion happened inside a machine that used a diluted form of potassium hydroxide, a substance known to be potentially flammable when mixed with water or other materials. Fire Chief Glenn Ericksen stated that ten people—seven employees and three police officers—were hospitalized with respiratory issues, though none were in life-threatening condition.
The incident took place shortly after 9 a.m., and emergency crews were met with heavy smoke upon arrival. One employee was found dead at the scene. The company, which specializes in manufacturing parts for hybrid vehicles, is now under investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
