Orland Fire Protection District Chief Ken Brucki has been placed on a paid leave of absence, with Battalion Chief Michael Schofield stepping in as interim leader. The decision was confirmed by a district spokesperson on Thursday, following an announcement that Brucki requested the leave for personal reasons. The leave began on Tuesday and is expected to last indefinitely. Brucki, who has led the Orland Fire Protection District since June 2012, was chosen from three finalists after the retirement of former chief Bryant Krizik, who had been on administrative leave. Before joining Orland, Brucki spent over two decades with the Pleasantview Fire Protection District, serving areas like Countryside, Hodgkins, Indian Head Park, and parts of Burr Ridge. His career began in 1988 as a volunteer firefighter in Merrionette Park, and he later worked part-time in Darien-Woodridge before becoming a full-time firefighter at Pleasantview. In a separate report, it was revealed that Brucki is currently under a comprehensive administrative review, covering job performance and financial matters. According to attorney Burt Odelson, who represents the fire district, the review is an internal audit examining Brucki’s conduct, work history, and financial records. The district has not provided details about the nature of the investigation or the reason for his leave. Odelson emphasized that the review is ongoing and that the district is “looking into different records.” He also noted that the fire department declined a request for financial records and emails related to Brucki’s leave, citing potential interference with active administrative proceedings. The Daily Southtown had sought this information under Illinois’ freedom of information law. Schofield, who has served with the Orland Fire Protection District since 1978, is now leading the department during Brucki’s absence. While the exact cause of the leave remains unclear, the situation has sparked interest among local residents and media, raising questions about the leadership and operations of the fire district. As the review continues, the community awaits further updates on Brucki’s status and the outcome of the internal investigation.
