Orland Fire Protection District Chief Ken Brucki has been placed on a paid leave of absence, with Battalion Chief Michael Schofield stepping in as the interim leader. This development was confirmed by a district spokesperson on Thursday. According to Ray Hanania, the chief's leave is indefinite and for personal reasons, though no specific details were provided.
Brucki, who has led the district since June 2012, was previously selected from three finalists after the retirement of Bryant Krizik, who had been on administrative leave. Before joining Orland, Brucki spent over two decades with the Pleasantview Fire Protection District, serving communities such as Countryside, Hodgkins, Indian Head Park, and parts of Burr Ridge. His career began in 1988 as a volunteer firefighter in Merrionette Park, later transitioning to part-time roles in Darien-Woodridge before becoming a full-time employee at Pleasantview.
The recent leave comes amid an internal administrative review of Brucki’s job performance and financial records, as revealed in a previous Chicago Tribune article. The fire district’s attorney, Burt Odelson, stated that the review is “kind of an audit†focusing on Brucki’s conduct, performance, and finances. Odelson emphasized that the district is not currently disclosing the reasons behind the leave, and the investigation is ongoing.
This review followed a request by the Daily Southtown under Illinois’ freedom of information law for Brucki’s financial records and communications related to his leave. However, the district refused to release some documents, citing concerns about interfering with active administrative proceedings.
Schofield, who has served with the Orland Fire Protection District since 1978, is now managing day-to-day operations while Brucki is on leave. The situation has sparked curiosity and concern among local residents and officials, as the lack of transparency raises questions about the nature of the investigation and the future leadership of the department.
