A worker was trapped in a hole in the front yard of a home on Aspen Drive in Buffalo Grove late Monday afternoon, prompting an emergency response from local firefighters and police. The incident occurred while workers were performing sewer service repairs, and a ground collapse left one of them stuck in the excavation.
Upon arrival, firefighters found workers urgently trying to free their colleague. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team was mobilized, with units from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods joining the effort. Initial reports indicated that the worker was unconscious and not breathing, heightening concerns for his condition.
Rescue teams from multiple towns—including Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett—arrived on scene. The Buffalo Grove Mobile Communications unit also responded. A special request was made for an Arlington Heights Public Works sewer vacuum, but the rescue operation was completed before it could arrive.
Despite the coordinated efforts, the victim did not survive. He was later transported from the scene by a Mundelein ambulance. The incident has raised awareness about the dangers of trench work and the importance of proper safety protocols during such operations.
Photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, show the extent of the excavation and the serious nature of the rescue attempt. Multiple images are available, highlighting the teamwork and dedication of first responders who arrived quickly to assist in this tragic event.
