Excerpts from Firehousenews.com:

At least 16 firefighters lost their lives in July while on duty, with the majority of deaths attributed to medical conditions such as heart disease and hypertension. The month marked one of the deadliest for firefighters in recent years, according to data from the United States Fire Administration (USFA). In fact, July 2024 has already surpassed many previous months in terms of fatalities.

Looking back at past tragedies, June 2013 stands out as the deadliest month in recent history, when 25 firefighters died—including 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who were killed in a deadly wildfire in Arizona.

“As temperatures continue to rise, it's more important than ever for firefighters to stay alert and take care of themselves,” said Ron Siarnicki, executive director of the National Fallen Firefighters’ Foundation. “Hydration is key—studies have shown that even mild dehydration can increase the risk of serious heat-related illnesses.”

Firefighters experiencing symptoms like cramps, nausea, or dizziness should seek immediate medical attention. Dehydration can cause blood to thicken, which puts additional strain on the body during physically demanding tasks.

The following firefighters died in July while serving their communities:

  • Lt. Andrew Russell, 48, Harrison Township Fire Department, MI – Died on July 2 due to complications after shoulder surgery.
