On Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2023, Palatine firefighters were called to an apartment building at 12 E Dundee Quarter after a report of smoke on the third floor. Upon arrival, police officers observed smoke and then flames coming from the roof, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a Code 4 working fire.
Palatine crews launched an interior attack with two hose lines on the third floor and conducted building searches. However, due to the intense fire volume above and in the mansard roof, along with rapidly deteriorating conditions, firefighters were forced to evacuate the structure and shift to a defensive strategy. During the evacuation, a firefighter on a balcony was unable to exit through the interior and called for help. He successfully descended a ground ladder to safety.
The fire spread past the fire wall and reached the adjacent building, causing significant damage to its roof and third floor. Multiple structural collapses occurred in the original building, raising concerns about the stability of the area.
In response, units from Palatine Tower 85, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, and Arlington Heights Tower 1 deployed master streams to control the blaze. Additional support came from several nearby departments, including Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Lake Zurich, Barrington, Inverness, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District. This list likely doesn’t include every agency that arrived on scene.
Emergency responders worked tirelessly under challenging conditions, ensuring the safety of residents and preventing further spread of the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no injuries have been reported so far. Local officials are currently assessing the full extent of the damage.
